Sex and the internet -- Apr 19th 2007 -- From The Economist print edition: Is lascivious online content, traditionally on top, losing its lustre?

"[...]Many will see this as a sign that the internet is maturing. After all, every new media - from photography to video to satellite television - starts life as a haven for porn; the balance only shifting towards more socially acceptable content once mass adoption is achieved. However, this transition is unlikely to have taken place in the online world at this point in time. What is more likely, is that much of the pornographic content of old has simply moved from dedicated adult sites and begun to permeate the new social networking / community / chat sites (thereby causing the former's fall in popularity and the latter's almost inversely-proportional rise). It is well-known that Second Life's virtual economy, for example, was built on the back of adult content and related economic transactions."

What do you think?

A'dam Day 236

By both the looks & the sound of it, it's about 8 months since I got here now. And it took some 8 + (around) 10,5 months of me living in this country for Mum to come and visit, but now she'll be doing just that & I'm really really happy!
Mum will get here in some 3h & I'm sure we'll have a great time together! Just as I'm sure she couldn't be more right in the timing, at least from a couple of points of view. One of them would be a phone call for an appointment for a meeting (yes, it sounds terribly bureaucratic to me as well!) which I'll see whether it takes me anywhere at all. The other one is more general. Together: General & Specific - which reminds me of an all-time fav, Sheep in the Big City. Well, perhaps its appropriateness shouldn't even be brought into discussion now!

As for next week:
Mon, 23rd: Sympo meeting & NL les
Tue, 24th: (prob) VRK
Wed, 25th: ICL lecture & (finally!) IELNLO exam
Thu, 26th: kopje koffie met de docent & NL les
Fri, 27th: IRL lecture & Paul's arrival

In any case, gotta finish the VRK huiswerk for now & hit it for the airpoooooort!!!

A'dam Day 224

Last seen: Babel, Blood Diamond & The Illusionist
[enjoyed them all, though in different manners and degrees]

Working on: my Criminal Law presentation tomorrow morning & my IELNLO exam tomorrow evening

Feeling: infected by this nasty virus that doesn't let me think properly, that gets me dizzy & weak. I don't like this virus!

On my mind: the Geneva trip, lists, internships, my MA thesis, these last courses, a job & the never-resolved issue of time management

As for Easter night, we had been to the Russian orthodox church in the neighbourhood; quite a different experience... [though, at least they had Easter at midnight and not 11.00 o'clock, like the Greeks from Utrecht 3 years ago!]
