On Lying & Collateral Damage

The film features a high concept narrative set in an alternate reality in which there is no such thing as lying and everything said is the absolute truth. In this world people make blunt, often cruel statements, including those that people would normally keep to themselves. There is a lack of religious belief, and the absence of fiction results in a movie industry limited to lecture-style historical readings, and advertisements as bluntly truthful as the people are.

A Lesson on How to Clean Unwanted Puddles: the Romanian Janitorial Style

If you used to think that indoor unwanted puddles may only be removed with the help of a mop and a bucket, then you're in for a surprise. And, admittedly, so was I.
First time I've seen this - a couple of weeks ago - I thought it an isolated and something of an amusing event. I smiled on the inside [or at least that's how I meant it] and walked on.
But then, to my disbelief, I've seen it again. And again. And today, again.
What's the big mystery here? - Well, being the kind and sharing soul that I am, I'll tell you what: there seems to be a different way of cleaning puddles in, say, shopping malls, than the one referred to in my first sentence on top.
What, you ask? - It's called [... I s'ppose..] something along the lines of 'brooming it around'.
How does it work? - This is the funky part: instead of a mop, one uses a broom. And no bucket whatsoever is needed. Instead of getting the water together in one single recipient, one spreads the water around, in circles the sizes of which keep growing and, at times, modifying.
But, you'll ask, doesn't that take an awful lot of time? - Well, sure. But what should the janitors spend their time doing anyway? Isn't this way better than .. well, than anything else?! It can easily take up half an hour to one or two full hours, depending on the size of the puddles and the technique of them who broom them around. So, how cool is that!?

Construction of the ark began in January 2006 and the scenes involving the ark were shot in a Crozet, Virginia subdivision called Old Trail.^[3] The ark was designed to meet the actual measurements of the biblical ark, measuring 450 feet (140 m) long, 80 feet (24 m) wide, and 51 feet (16 m) high.^[8] The ark's layout was also based on pictures in several children's books that crew members had read in their childhoods.^[3] When the characters were filmed during the day building the ark or were on location elsewhere, crew members would further construct the ark at night.^[3] A concrete base was built to support the weight of the large ark; after filming was completed, the ark was taken down in a week, and the base in another week.^[3]

In disassembling the set, everything that was salvageable from the ark was donated to Habitat for Humanity. "Leave no trace" was the slogan used by the director as part of the DVD's bonus features, "The Almighty Green Set".

True, it was only a reference to Hot Fuzz when I first saw Simon on the screen, but given the lack of time constraints, I had decided to deepen my understanding of his work :)

Wall-E

You’ve already heard—Wall-E is a part of Hollywood’s go-green conspiracy to brainwash our children into obeying Overlord Gore. It’s certainly environmentally conscious, including a scolding speech near the end about a planet in trouble and a do-nothing populace, but such a reading of Pixar’s latest is too easy. Set well into the millennium, the film opens in the majesty of outer space (“there’s a world outside of Yonkers,” croons the soundtrack) before switching to an aerial survey of Planet Earth in ruin—rusted-over and littered, with a skyline of trash-cube skyscrapers. So, Wall-E is anti-waste, sure, but it has an odd and tender affection for artifact, as well—the titular robot, a Sisyphean garbage compactor with only a cockroach for a friend, collects Zippos, bubble wrap, Rubik’s cubes and other assorted tchotchkes from among humanity’s detritus with the same reverence with which we hoard pre-historic earthenware. (This might help to explain the apparent contradiction many commentators have noted between the film’s politics and its marketing, which includes more than its fair share of landfill-bound merchandising.) Above all, Wall-E is not a critique of the state of things but a condemnation of a mindset. It is not so much anti-waste as it is anti-wastefulness.
